Sandisk Extreme 900
Today we're looking at a rather interesting product, with a rather interesting amount of storage. Well of course, it's a storage product and the type is USB 3.1 storage. The product I'm describing is the Extreme 900 from Sandisk.
This product comes with USB 3.1 connectivity, backwards compatible with 3.0 and 2.0 of course, and boosting a whopping 960GB of storage.
Some might think that, hey.. Filling up 960GB would take forever! Well that is true if you're using a USB 2 interface, but with the blazing speed of USB 3 we can theoretically reach a speed of up to 5 Gbps – that is, Gigabit.
Most USB storage devices can't handle that speed simply because the technology isn't there yet, at least not for the budget of the average consumer. However, we're getting closer and with the Extreme 900 from Sandisk we're getting real close.
The Sandisk Extreme 900 comes in a very stylish package and when it's very stylish, it features a hinged front that opens up to reveal the product itself behind a window. Overall, a very nice box with lots of information. For example, that you should see a 9x speed increase compared to other USB storage devices and that this device features the new type of USB connector, the Type-C, which is reversible. Finally an end to figuring out which way you have to plug in the cable.
The device comes in a semi rugged design with rubber bumpers around its sides and overall an aluminum case. The only "opening" you have on the device is the USB Type-C connector and on the bottom we find some model description and compliance information.
Together in the box with the Extreme 900 we get an information booklet and two USB cables, one of which is USB-A USB 3 to USB Type-C and one USB Type-C to USB Type-C.
Extreme 900 comes in a rather small package measuring 13cm x 8.5cm and just about 1.6cm thick. When connected to the computer it does not transmit any sound of any sort, it does have an activity LED and it does heat up just a tiny bit but it's hard to measure because it's approximately around 5 degrees Celcius – Nothing strange in other words.
You might wonder what's inside the Extreme 900, I wonder as well because its more or less impossible to open the device up. But after some research I found out that there are one or two regular SSD drives inside, depending on the total storage amount. I'm sure that there is only SSD inside our test model and for the 1.92TB version there are two times the SSD module we have in our test model – just a guess though, not totally sure.
On next page we'll test this external beast and see how well it performs.
